Heritage Weekly Auction ending 2/24/19

2/24/19 UPDATE

I'm back, just in time for the lead-in to the February Heritage Signature auction.  But first, I need to touch on Heritage's weekly auction ending 1/13/19, where two of my predictions were quite close to the actual selling price:

John Buscema Avengers #53; ComicArtAds estimate $4,500, final price including BP--$4,320

Gene Colan Captain America #137; ComicArtAds estimate $4,500, final price including BP--$3,120

Gene Colan Sub-Mariner #11; ComicArtAds estimate $2,250, final price including BP--$2,280

Gene Colan Daredevil #64; ComicArtAds estimate $3,000, final price including BP--$1,560

George Tuska Power Man #24; ComicArtAds estimate $800, final price including BP--$408

To be only $30 off the mark for the Colan Subby page was pretty gratifying.  I was a bit optimistic on the other two Colan pages, but I chalk that up to being a Colan super-fan.  And I wasn't sad to be off on the Tuska Power Man page because I ended up winning it.

Heritage seems to have a tradition of loading up their weekly auctions ending right after a Signature auction with lots of great art that could have been in the Signature auction itself.  It will be hard to pick only a handful of auctions from the 259 lots this week to predict, but I'd like to start with Sub-Mariner #72 page-1 splash by Dan Adkins.  This is an attractive piece featuring "disco-suit" Subby lamenting ocean pollution.  Vince Colletta provides unusually solid inks.  I don't have any comps for this, so I'm kind of guessing here.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,750.

Phantom Stranger super-fans (you know who you are!) will be happy to see a sharp Jim Aparo page from Phantom Stranger #14.  This page has some great shots of the Phantom Stranger and a bad guy about to receive his (assumed) gruesome come-uppance. A couple of these pages had strong finishes last year at Heritage.  I think this page will do just about as well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,600.

Twice-up Gene Colan Daredevil art in a Heritage weekly auction?!?  Why not?  Gene's page from Daredevil #32 features some nifty images of Daredevil in costume.  I'm not the biggest fan of John Tartaglione's inks over Colan, but this page has to look very impressive in person.  Another page from this issue sold for $2,629 on Heritage in 2015.  This page is almost as good.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,400.

It is also unusual to see a Jack Davis EC page in a Heritage weekly auction, but this time around we have a Davis page from Haunt of Fear #17.  This page depicts a couple in trouble and includes some well-drawn and tense panels.  If you haven't spent all your money at the Heritage Signature auction earlier in the weekend, then this would be a great opportunity to add a nice David EC example to your collection.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,850.

I really dig the John Buscema page from Thor #178.  The inks by Vince Colletta look a bit scratchy and rushed, but the powerful images of Thor, the Stranger, and even the Abomination make this page pretty special nonetheless.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,500

The Don Heck/Werner Roth X-Men #45 page features some large images of Quicksilver as well as some good shots of Cyclops.  Roth's X-Men pages generally have sold for between $2K and $4K on Heritage over the past year or two.  Because this page doesn't have a lot of action of characters of interest such as Marvel Girl, I think this will fall toward the lower end of that range.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,250.  Another page from this issue was offered for sale by Graphic Collectibles back in 1996:

I really love the combination of Jim Mooney and Joe Sinnott on the early issues of Ms. Marvel.  This week's auction has a dynamite Mooney/Sinnott Ms. Marvel #4 action page where you can see plenty of Jim's blueline pencils underneath Joe's sharp inks.  I don't have a lot of comps for this page, but a splashy page from the same issue sold on Heritage for $836.50 back in 2009.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,400.

My final prediction from this week's auction is for a page from one of my all-time favorite comics storylines: the Korvac saga from the Avengers.  The Dave Wenzel page from Avengers #176 is a lighthearted moment prior to an intense battle that (spoiler alert!) kills most of the Avengers and many other heroes.  There is no fighting on this page, but many Avengers are pictured, along with curious suburban neighbors.  It's a fun page for sure.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,550.

Happy bidding everyone!

1/13/19 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

I was hoping to start off 2019 with a solid set of auction predictions. I wonder how that went...

Gene Colan Captain America #123; ComicArtAds estimate $400, final price including BP--$288

Jim Aparo The Brave and the Bold #135; ComicArtAds estimate $2,400, final price including BP--$3,840

Paul Gulacy Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu #3; ComicArtAds estimate $1,150, final price including BP--$432

Lary Hama Marvel Premiere #19; ComicArtAds estimate $675, final price including BP--$420

Curt Swan Hostess Fruit Pies advertisement; ComicArtAds estimate $2,700, final price including BP--$2,040

That was not one of my better weeks.  Has the government shutdown depressed auction prices?  I was really stunned at the low final prices for the Colan/Sinnott Cap page and the Gulacy MOKF page.  Of course, I spaced out on watching the end of the auction live, so I didn't end up boosting the final price of the Cap page with a last-second cut bid.  Heritage is continuing to provide high-quality art in its weekly auction this week as well.  Although it is late in the week, I wanted to discuss a few pieces in the Heritage auction ending January 13, 2019.

First up is a killer John Buscema/George Tuska page from Avengers #53.  This action page features members of the X-Men and Avengers fighting Magneto.  The page got off to a strong start, but I think it will go higher still.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate is $4,500, which is 100 times higher than what a page from the same issue listed for in 1991, courtesy of a Graphic Collectibles catalog:

If you are fan of Gene Colan (like me), then this week's auction is quite interesting, with several strong examples of Gene's work from the early 1970s.  Gene's rare collaborations with Bill Everett are coveted by some art fans, which makes the Colan/Everett page from Captain America #137 a real winner.  It looks like John Romita Sr. might have touched up Cap's face in one panel, but otherwise this page features everything that makes Everett inks interesting.  Several Colan/Everett pages from Cap #136 were auctioned by Heritage in 2014 and 2015.  The stronger examples went for $3K+.  I think this page will finish along the lines of the Avengers #53 page.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $4,500.

The Gene Colan/George Klein page from Sub-Mariner #11 is another stunner, with Namor running amok on a ship in every panel.  This page has a dynamic layout and would be a great example of Gene's Subby work.  However, I don't think this art combo has the same following as the Colan/Everett art combo.  Should finish pretty strong, though.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,250.  Graphic Collectibles advertised another action panel page from this issue in 1995:

This column's Colan trifecta concludes with a Gene Colan/Syd Shores page from Daredevil #64.  Heritage has offered similarly nice pages from this issue in 2008 and 2014, and they both finished around the $3K mark.  With DD in every panel, but a litle less action, I think this page will finish equally well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $3,000.  If you care to take another trip down memory lane, Hugo's Collectibles offered the next page from DD #64 for sale in 1998:

I'm going to make it a Marvel Zombie week of predictions by wrapping up with a George Tuska/Dave Hunt page from Power Man #24.  This was one of Dave Hunt's first full-inking jobs, and he shows some great potential here over George's pencils.  And who doesn't love the Circus of Crime?  This same page sold on Heritage back in 2007 for the princely sum of $77.68 (arrrgh!!!).  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $800.

Happy bidding one and all!

1/6/19 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Happy New Year dear readers!  Let's see how my last round of Heritage weekly auction predictions from early last month turned out:

Dick Dillin Justice League of America #151; ComicArtAds estimate $1,050, final price including BP--$1,380

Carmine Infantino Flash #133; ComicArtAds estimate $4,000, final price including BP--$6,000

Gene Colan Captain America #123; ComicArtAds estimate $825, final price including BP--$384

George Perez Ultraforce #8; ComicArtAds estimate $1,200, final price including BP--$900

I wasn't totally on target for any of these auctions, but I was pleased to see that my "realistic" estimate for the Dillin JLA page was not too far off.  The Dillin JLA pages on Heritage seem to have calmed down a bit over the past few weeks after a couple of pages finished pretty high previously.  The shocker for me was the Cap #123 page going for less than $400.  If someone offered me that page for $400, I would have a hard time turning it down.  Speaking of Cap #123...

This week's auction includes another nice-looking, but Cap-less, page from Captain America #123 by Gene Colan and Joe Sinnott.  I am going to be conservative and guess that this page will finish close to the previous page from this issue.  Maybe I'll even win it!  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $400.

A lot of nice Jim Aparo panel pages showed up in Heritage's weekly auctions in 2018, and we start off 2019 with a Jim Aparo page-one splash from The Brave and the Bold #135.  This sharp-looking splash features all of the Metal Men.  Nicer Aparo splashes finished at around $2,000 to around $5,000 in 2018.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,400.

It's always fun to see a Paul Gulacy Master of Kung Fu page from the 1970s.  This week's auction includes a Gulacy page from Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu #3.  This action-packed page doesn't feature Shang-Chi but does feature unusually solid Vince Colletta inks.  Primo MOKF pages have topped $5K on Heritage, but solid pages like this have ended up with more reasonable prices in the $1K-$2K range.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,150.

A page from this same issue was advertised in a 1979 issue of The Buyer's Guide for Comic Fandom:

In keeping with a martial arts theme, this week's auction features a Larry Hama Iron Fist page from Marvel Premiere #19.  A few of these pages have been appearing over the last few weeks at Heritage.  Is an issue being broken up?  Although the last couple of auctions for these pages have finished pretty strong, this page's images of Iron Fist show him wearing a hat, so he doesn't really look like the Iron Fist we know and love.  I think this may end up being the most affordable page offered by Heritage so far.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $675.

Hugo's Collectibles offered another page from this issue back in 1994:

I'm starting to get hungry as I write this, so I think I'll wrap things up for this week with a Curt Swan Hostess Fruit Pies advertisement featuring the Penguin.  Heritage has been running these types of pieces weekly for over a month now.  Several of them have had missing stats, but this ad is in very good condition.  (Can you imagine having to ask Robert Dennis or one of his peers to create replacement Hostess Twinkies or Fruit Pie stats?)  I think this piece will keep pace with the previous Hostess ads, which have finished in the $2K to $4K price range.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,700.

Bon appetit, and happy bidding!

12/9/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Last time around I focused on some goofy pages.  I was not predicting high prices for any of the pages, but some of them performed worse than I expected:

Dick Ayers Astonishing Tales #22; ComicArtAds estimate $190, final price including BP--$120

Sal Buscema Thor #372; ComicArtAds estimate $220, final price including BP--$89

Bob Lubbers Human Fly #16; ComicArtAds estimate $310, final price including BP--$264

Syd Shores Red Wolf #6; ComicArtAds estimate $375, final price including BP--$360

I am pleased with my Red Wolf prediction being only $15 off, but I was surprised that a Sal Buscema Thor page from 1986 went for only $89.  Zaniac is a really lame bad guy, I guess.  I'll try to focus on some more interesting pages for the upcoming Heritage Weekly auction.

First up is a "splashy" chapter page from Justice League of America #151, with art by Dick Dillin and Frank McLaughlin.  This page features some nice big images of Aquaman, Hawkman, and Hawkwoman.  Dillin JLA pages have been appearing regularly in the Heritage weekly auctions for a couple of months now, finishing up between $500 and $1,000, with the exception of the $3,840 Adam Strange wedding page from a couple of weeks ago.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,050

Several pages from this book were offered for sale by Hugo Brache in his 1995 and 1996 catalogs (which leads me to believe the book might have been broken up back then):

You don't often see high-quality Silver Age Flash pages in Heritage weekly auctions, but this week's page from Flash #133 by Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella is a beauty.  The Flash is featured in action in every panel, and the page includes a head-shot drawing on the back side by an unidentified artist.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $4,000

Like with JLA #151, pages from this Flash book were offered for sale back in the 1990s, including this page advertised by Tom Horvitz in Comic Buyer's Guide in 1992:

I am a big fan of Gene Colan and Joe Sinnott's work on Captain America.  This week's auction has a sharp page from Captain America #123.  The page doesn't feature Cap but does have a nice-looking large top panel.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $825

A quick scan of the ComicArtAds archive reveals that a much nicer page from this book was offered for sale by Graphic Collectibles in a 1992 catalog:

Along with Gene Colan, George Perez is one of my all-time favorite comic artists.  I remember being pretty psyched in the mid-1990s when Perez was teasing a return to the Avengers by introducing them into Malibu's Ultraforce title.  This week's auction has a sweet George Perez page from Ultraforce #8, inked by Keith Aiken.  The highlight is a large corner panel featuring the original Avengers line-up and Loki.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,200

And because I don't have any vintage art ads for Ultraforce, so here is a ad for a page from Avengers #162 that appeared in a 1984 Graphic Collectibles catalog:

Happy bidding y'all!

11/18/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

My record of pretty decent Heritage weekly auction predictions ended this past week.  I was over-optimistic on art by Sal Buscema and Jack Kirby, and I didn't give Gil Kane's Amazing Spider-Man art enough credit.  Specifically:

Sal Buscema Fantastic Four Annual #13: ComicArtAds estimate $2,700, final price including BP--$1,920

Jack Kirby Western Tales #31: ComicArtAds estimate $2,000, final price including BP--$1,020

Gil Kane Amazing Spider-Man #150: ComicArtAds estimate $3,100, final price including BP--$3,840

This week's Heritage weekly auction, ending on Sunday, November 18, includes an exceptoinally large number of comic art pieces--308 total.  To mix things up, I am going to focus on art featuring lame or wacky characters who say lame or wacky things.

"Crustor!  And the rest of Granitor's Legion of Assassins!"  I have no idea what's happening on this fairly loose Dick Ayers page from Astonishing Tales #22, other than guys with poiny ears, horns, and wings in trenchcoats are shooting at each other.  This page could be worth bidding on just for the sound effects in the last panel: Unn!  Spreee!  Fzzapt!  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $190.

"Fool!  Zaniac kills the pretty pretties!  And Jane Foster is pretty pretty tonight!"  So sayeth the villain of Thor #372, which features art by Sal Buscama.  Zaniac is defeated by Thor and (spoiler alert) Judge Peace, a law enforcement officer from the distant future.  It's hard to believe Walt Simonson wrote this, but everyone has an off day.  The inking is kind of lackluster too.  For Zaniac completists only.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $220.

"Welcome back to the land of the living, Blaze!  You've been saved right at the edge of death!"  This is the Human Fly's slightly cliched and confusing greeting to a grinning woman he is carrying in the last panel of a Bob Lubbers page from Human Fly #16.  The Ricardo Villamonte inks on this page, like the other pages from this issue that Heritage has been auctioning off over the past few weeks, are kind of nice.  Values for these pages have been creeping up week by week, and I think this page will maintain that general trend.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $310.

"Ohhh!  I slipped--on those juniper leaves!"  And down goes Red Wolf, kraking his head on the ground as the bad guy gets away.  This painful scene appears on a Syd Shores page from Red Wolf #6.  This actually is a nice-looking page with solid inks by Jack Abel, and achy shots of Red Wolf in every panel.  Another page from this comic went for $262.90 in May, but this page is stronger.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $375.

None of these pages will ever make it into Heritage's Platinum Session, but they are fun in different, goofy ways.  As always, happy bidding!

11/11/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

A few weeks ago I predicted the final prices of some Heritage weekly auction art.  Here's what happened:

John Buscema Avengers #74; ComicArtAds estimate $1,100, final price including BP--$870

John Buscema Conan #43; ComicArtAds estimate $1,250, final price including BP--$1,020

Bill Sienkiewicz Rampaging Hulk #15; ComicArtAds estimate $1,400, final price including BP--$2,400

Barry Smith Archer and Armstrong #8; ComicArtAds estimate $1,300, final price including BP--$1,560

I wasn't too far off, except for the Sienkiewicz Hulk page featuring the Moon Knight.  I attribute this result to the Moon Knight as opposed to the Hulk, and I will try not to underestimate Sienkiewcz Moon Knight values in the future.  I was a bit surprised that the Buscema/Palmer page didn't finish over $900.  I think someone got a nice page for the price there.  Looking ahead to the Heritage weekly auction ending on Sunday, November 11, there are several interesting pieces once again.

Once again, there are an extraordinary number of John Buscema Marvel pages in this auction.  Although there are interesting Buscema pages inked by Heck, DeZuniga, Colletta, and Alcala in this auction, I really like the page from Fantastic Four Annual #13 by brother Sal Buscema and Joe Sinnott.  This page features the entire team, including an enraged Thing and a fainting Sue Storm, and the original FF baddie himself, the Mole Man.  The inking is superb, needless to say.  I think this page will do quite well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $2,700

A solid Davy Crockett page from Jack Kirby's Western Tales #31 shows up this week.  1950s Kirby Western art is not as sought-after as his early monster art, but this page does fit the bill as a good example of Kirby's storytelling.  Graphic Collectibles offered up a action-packed page from the next issue for $350 back in 1997:

And Heritage sold a nice page from this same issue back in 2015 for about $2,000.  I think this page will finish somewhere in that neighborhood as well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,000.

You don't see mid-1970s Amazing Spider-Man action pages in Heritage weekly auctions too often, but there is a strong page from Amazing Spider-Man #150, by Gil Kane and several credited inkers this week.  Spidey is in action against the Spider-Slayer here.  This is not Kane at his absolute best as the art looks a bit sketchy and rushed here, but it is from a memorable issue of ASM and some great action.  A page from this issue, featuring the Vulture, last appeared at Heritage in 2015, when it finished a little over $4,000.  This week's page is not as strong art-wise as the Vulture page from 2015, but I think it will finish pretty strong.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $3,100.

Finally, I had meant to write about last week's auction but didn't get the write-up done in time.  I had planned to feature the beautiful and action-packed page from Daredevil #80 by Gene Colan and Tom Palmer.  I thought the classic Gerry Conway purple prose in the first panel was one of the most amazing aspects of this page, but the shot of ol' Hornhead in panel four was pretty great also.  Ardent auction-watchers might have recognized this page from the May 2018 Heritage Signature Auction, where it sold for $2,270.50.  I thought that coming up again for auction on the same site so soon may not do wonders for the value here, unless the May 2018 sale was a great bargain.  I had come up with a ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate of $1,900, but the page finished below that at $1,680.  I'm not sure if this auction qualifies as a "Flip of the Day" entry on the CGC Boards, but it must have been at least a slight disappointment if it was consigned by the May 2018 auction winner.

Until next time, happy bidding!

10/14/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

I was feeling pretty good about my predictions from three weeks ago.  Was my confidence well-founded?  Let's see....

John Buscema Avengers #84; ComicArtAds estimate $2,600, final price including BP--$2,520

Val Mayerik Monster of Frankenstein #18; ComicArtAds estimate $900, final price including BP--$720

Frank Thorne Marvel Feature #2 (page 2); ComicArtAds estimate $1,200, final price including BP--$1,800

Dick Ayers Hulk #143; ComicArtAds estimate $1,400, final price including BP--$1,260

Not bad, if I do say so myself, with the estimates falling within $180 or closer of the final price for three of the four auctions.  I overestimated the market fatigue with Frank Thorne Red Sonja pages.  Perhaps these earlier Marvel Feature pages are more desirable than pages from the later main Red Sonja title.  This was an attractive page with several panels, most of which have nice images of Sonja, so I understand why the final price was higher than I expected.

Looking ahead to this Sunday's Heritage auction ending on Sunday, October 14, there are several cool pages, including a page from Avengers #74 by John Buscema and Tom Palmer.  This page features only one smallish super-hero image with a shot of the back side of the Black Panther (unmasked) in a bottom panel.  However, the Buscema/Palmer art combo depicts a dramatic confrontation from a memorable storyline.  I can't see a Buscema/Palmer page from their first run on the Avengers going for less than $1K these days, but I don't see this going much over $1K either.  This page could be a nice "entry-level" John Buscema/Tom Palmer Avengers page for someone.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,100.

This week's auction has another classic Marvel art combo, John Buscema and Ernie Chan, on a page from Conan #43.  Tony Dispoto offered two other pages from this book in his second Comic Art Showcase catalog that was published way back in 1974.  These Conan #43 pages had just been published at the time:

Heritage has offered three other pages from this book over the past few years, and they all have ended up over $1K.  I think this page, although not action-packed, will do the same.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,250.

This auction features a nice-looking page by Bill Sienkiewicz and Bob McLeod from Hulk #15.  There aren't a lot of recent comps for this page, so I am going to have to guess here.  The page has great shots of the Hulk and some one-sided action as the Moon Knight gets smacked down with authority.  Sienkiewicz Moon Knight art prices have been kind of strong lately, so I am going high on this.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,400.

Barry Windsor Smith art did pretty well last week in the Heritage auctions, and there are a few more entries this week.  I think this week's page from Archer and Armstrong #8 is a looker.  Several pages from this same issue were offered up by Graphic Collectibles at fairly strong prices in 1993-1994, including this page:

I don't really know what to expect with the price on this page, but it's off to a strong start and kind of reminds me of Smith's Weapon X art.  I think this should get a good price.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,300.

I think I'll wrap things up for now.  Good luck to everyone who is bidding in this auction, and thanks for reading!

9/23/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Where has the time gone?  It's good to be writing these columns again after over four months.  Let's go back in time to see how my Heritage weekly auctions from back in early May went:

John Buscema Thor #186; ComicArtAds estimate $2,800, final price including BP--$2,629

Frank Robbins Captain America #190; ComicArtAds estimate $1,400, final price including BP--$1,314.50

Irv Novick Batman #217; ComicArtAds estimate $1,900, final price including BP--$9,560.00

Michael Golden Batman Family #19; ComicArtAds estimate $2,000, final price including BP--$2,868.00

I guess my instincts about Marvel art values are more spot-on than my instincts about DC art.  I still can't get over the final price on the Novick Batman #217 pages.  Just looking at the art in a superficial way, those pages look like they should be netting several hundred dollars at auction, tops.  I'll turn my attention to this week's Heritage auction and look forward to finding out whether my predicting skills have gotten rusty over the past several months.

There are some really exceptional pages in the current Heritage weekly auction, including a page from Avengers #84 by John Buscema and Tom Palmer.  This page has some pretty good action featuring Quicksilver, Goliath, and the Vision.  Buscema/Palmer Avengers art from the early 1970s seems to be doing very well these days, so I think this page will finish fairly strong.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,600.

The Monster of Frankenstein #18 splash by Val Mayerik and Klaus Janson is a pretty good-looking piece.  It was offered up on Heritage over 10 years ago and ended up with a selling price of $227.05.  I don't think any Marvel 1970s splash should go for less than $400, but then again a 1970s Amazing Adventures interior splash by Herb Trimpe didn't hit $400 last week.  I don't quite see this Frankenstein splash topping $1K though, due to the focus being more on Zandor than the Monster.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $900.

My goodness, two Marvel Feature #2 pages featuring Frank Thorne's Red Sonja?!?  Page 2 from Marvel Feature #2 is the stronger page of the two, and has the higher bid right now.  When Red Sonja pages came on the market from Thorne's collection, panel pages like this had $1,400 price tags on them, if I remember correctly.  I think the market has cooled off a bit, but Marvel Feature #2 is a pretty early appearance by the Frank Thorne Sonja.  I think this could do fairly well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,200.

Finally, to make this an all-Marvel week of predictions, I want to focus on the Hulk #143 page by Dick Ayers.  Heritage has auctioned 13 pages from this book so far, between 2012 and 2017.  This page has the supporting cast in the top tier and good images of Dr. Doom and the Hulk in the last panel.  I wonder whether anyone is trying to put this book back together.  Judging by a quick look at ComicArtFans, I don't think so.   Still, this page has some good stuff going for it, and I am pretty sure it will break the $1K mark.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $1,400.

Thanks for reading!  I'll see you next time, True Believers.

5/6/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Let's look back a couple of weeks ago to see whether my Heritage weekly auction predictions were too low, too high, or just right:

Ron Lim Infinity War #1; ComicArtAds estimate $1,450, final price including BP--$1,195.00

Jim Aparo Phantom Stranger #22; ComicArtAds estimate $1,100, final price including BP--$1,792.50

Berke Brethed Bloom County strip; ComicArtAds estimate $2,100, final price including BP--$3,107.00

Before the auction ended, a collector who focuses on Phantom Stranger art wrote to me to tell me that he thought I was a bit high with my $1,100 estimate.  Turns out I was more than a bit low, and the Phantom Stranger collector ended up winning the auction. He now has started an interesting thread on the CGC Boards on the importance of dialogue on original art pages.

The Heritage weekly auction ending May 6, 2018, has some interesting pieces, including this Thor #186 page, which is beautifully illustrated by John Buscema and Joe Sinnott.  This page has already topped $1,300 with a few days to go.  However, due to the nice Thor images in every panel and dramatic content, I think this page has a lot of room to grow, price-wise.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,800.

This auction also features a fairly groovy Frank Robbins Captain America #190 page, with some fine Cap and Falcon action in the top panel.  Vince Colletta is not my favorite inker over Robbins, but the inks are pretty solid.  This page is up to about $900 with a few days to go, and I don't really see it doubling between now and the end of the auction.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,400.

An Irv Novick Batman #217 panel page is doing very well so far at close to $1,700.  This page apparently is noteworthy in a historic sense, but the art is pretty basic.  An action page from the same issue sold for $1,434 at Heritage last month.  I don't see this current page going much higher at all, but then again I'm more of a Marvel guy.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,800.

To wrap things up for this week, I'd like to focus on the Michael Golden/P. Craig Russell Batman Family #19 page.  This "splashy" page features a stunning portrait of Batman by two top-rate artists and would be a super example of 1970s Golden Batman art.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,000.

See you next time, and good luck with your bids!

4/22/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

It's good to be making some predictions again after taking a week off.  I'm afraid my last round of predictions were a bit too high and a bit too low:

Mike Ploog Marvel Premiere #38; ComicArtAds estimate $950, final price including BP--$776.75

Keith Pollard Thor #319; ComicArtAds estimate $1,050, final price including BP--$657.25

Marie Severin Spectacular Spider-Man #47; ComicArtAds estimate $850, final price including BP--$1,314.50

The Ploog and Pollard prices seem pretty appropriate.  I guess there wasn't much of a bidding war going on for those two pages.  I am a bit surprised by what seems to be a strong finish for the Severin Spidey page.  I need to remember that Spider-Man art commands a premium in most cases these days.

The Heritage weekly auction ending on Sunday, April 22, is a bit smaller than usual with 121 art lots.  However, there are some interesting pieces, staring with a Ron Lim Infinity War page that I believe had made a brief appearance in a Heritage weekly auction several weeks ago, before being pulled.  If this week's Ron Lim Infinity War #1 page looks familiar, it's because the page was offered up by Heritage in November 2017, ending at $1,314.50.  Heritage is very careful to disclose a tear at the top of the page, another example of how their auction descriptions are peerless in the comic art auction world.  Is this page being re-offered so soon because of the upcoming Avengers movie?  Maybe so, but I don't see it as much more valuable than it was in November.  Plus, there's a lot of "Infinity" pages coming up in the Heritage Signature auction.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,450.

This auction has yet another trio of very nice Jim Aparo panel pages, including a quiet but effective page from Phantom Stranger #22.  A pretty nice Aparo page from Phantom Stranger #10 sold for $1,434 on Heritage in August 2016.  I think that page was stronger than this week's page, but prices have generally trended upward over the past few years, so this week's page won't finish too far behind the 2016 page.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,100.

I'll wrap up with something a little different for this column: a Berke Brethed Bloom County strip.  A similar-quality strip sold for $1,673 two months ago on Heritage.  It seems like Bill the Cat is a fairly desirable character, and the subject matter is quite topical.  I think this week's strips could do pretty darn well.  Your ComicArtAds pree-auction estimate: $2,100.

Good luck to any bidders this weekend!  Best regards, Lee

4/8/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

I'm back after taking a week off, so let's see how my predictions from two weeks ago went:

Jim Aparo The Brave and the Bold #114; ComicArtAds estimate $1,100, final price including BP--$1,135.25

George Perez Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #20; ComicArtAds estimate $700, final price including BP--$1,075.50

George Tuska et al Iron Man #54; ComicArtAds estimate $2,600, final price including BP--$2,868

This was my best round of predictions in quite a while, with two out of three being pretty close.  I am fine with being a little off with the Perez page as it was a strong page, and I like to see Perez art do well.  It will be interesting to see whether all of this Aparo art will continue to get good prices, or whether the market will get a bit saturated.  I think good art will always do well, so I think Aparo prices at Heritage will stay strong.  On to the Heritage weekly auction ending this Sunday 4/8/18....

I don't recall seeing a lot of Mike Ploog 1970s Marvel art in the Heritage weekly auctions, so the Mike Ploog and Alex Nino Marvel Premiere #38 page was a nice surprise.  This page was offered for sale by Mitch Itkowitz (who correctly identified it as page 22, not 13) for the fairly strong price of $250 back in 1996:

I like that Nino's inking does not overpower Ploog's pencils on this page, especially in the wrinkled face of the old man.  This page is aleady a little over $400 as of this writing, but I see it doing better than twice that in the end.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $950.

I think the Keith Pollard/Brett Breeding Thor #319 page is pretty sharp also.  You could never tell from this page that the villain of this book is super-lame (anyone remember the Zaniac?).  Pollard Thor panel pages have appeared sporadically in Heritage auctions over the last 10 years and have done reasonably well.  This is a pretty strong example, with solid inks, a great transformation sequence, and a nice big image of Thor in flight, so I think it will do well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,050.

I think Marie Severin and Bruce Patterson produced some good-looking art together.  The end result on this Severin-Patterson Spectacular Spider-Man #47 page reminds me a bit of Steve Ditko's Spider-man art.  This action-packed page, with several good images of Spidey, should have a pretty strong end price.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $850.

That's all for this week.  Good luck to anyone bidding on these auctions or anything else this weekend!

3/25/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

I was hoping to report on three of my predictions for the Heritage weekly auction that ended on 3/18/18, but a Ron Lim Infinity War #1 page was pulled from the auction for some reason.  And I had a good feeling about my prediction for that page....  I didn't do so well with the other two, but I wasn't super far off:

Don Heck Invaders #35 (3-page lot); ComicArtAds estimate $750, final price including BP--$501.90

Herb Trimpe Super-Villain Team-Up #6; ComicArtAds estimate $900, final price including BP--$1,195

I wish I had bid on those Invaders pages as the Heck/Hoberg art was pretty nice.  I think that lot was a good deal at a little over $150/page.  On the other hand, I would not have been a contender for the Trimpe SVTU page at about $1,200.  I love Trimpe's art, but I have never been a huge fan of how he drew the Fantastic Four, either in the 1970s or later in the 1990s when he "Imaged-up" his art to stay employed at Marvel.

This week's Heritage auction ending 3/25/18 continues to offer up some good stuff.  If you are a Jim Aparo fan, this is the Heritage weekly auction for you.  The auction includes four sharp pages, including a page from The Brave and the Bold #114, featuring Batman and Aquaman.  This page has nice shots of the heroes, some bad guys, and some exotic sea life.  It is already approaching $600, and I think it will finish strong.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $1,100.

I really like the George Perez Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #20 page, which features lots of White Tiger action and solid inks by Jack Abel.  Another page from the same issue sold about a year ago at Heritage for a little over $500.  Both pages are strong in their own ways, but I think this week's page may do a bit better due to the action panels.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $700.

The last piece I would like to hightlight this week is the Iron Man #54 page by the art team of George Tuska, Bill Everett, and Vince Colletta.  This page comes from the estate of Ethan Roberts and features Bill Everett's handiwork on the Namor heads, apparently.  Two other Iron Man-Subby battle pages from Ethan's collection were auctioned at Heritage last year, closing at $5,258 and $3,107, respectively.  I think this page is not quite as strong due to glue stains in the last panel and less-dynamic battle scenes, but it will still finish pretty strong.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $2,600.

Good luck with any bids you might be placing!  Best regards, Lee

3/18/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

After a short run of off-base auction estimates, I was hoping to be able to turn it around with the Heritage weekly auction that ended on 3/11/18:

John Byrne Drax the Destroyer; ComicArtAds estimate $2,250, final price including BP--$2,151

Gil Kane John Carter Warlord of Mars #5; ComicArtAds estimate $750, final price including BP--$657.25

Bob Hall Spectacular Spider-Man #74; ComicArtAds estimate $1,100, final price including BP--$2,031.50

Arvell Jones Iron Man #74; ComicArtAds estimate $800, final price including BP--$310.70

James Sherman Super-Team Family #9; ComicArtAds estimate $375, final price including BP--$179.25

George Tuska Sub-Mariner #41; ComicArtAds estimate $900, final price including BP--$549.70

Well, one (and a half?) out of six ain't good.  I was happy to be wrong about the Bob Hall Spectacular Spider-Man #74 page.  The surprisingly high price proves that there are some rabid Deb Whitman fans out there.

Moving right along to this week's Heritage auction ending 3/18/18, there are a few lots that greatly interest me.  The first is a three-page lot from Invaders #35 by Don Heck and Rick Hoberg.  Hoberg's inks are really sharp here and greatly enhance the look of Heck's pencils.  There is a somewhat unfortunate shot of Miss America in the first panel of page 22, and Hoberg's art has not been doing really well at Heritage when put into lots like this.  Still, I think these pages are exceptionally nice and should do fairly well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $750.

"Cosmic" art is hot these days, so it's no wonder that the Ron Lim Infinity War #1 page has a lot of interest so far.  This page has some good inks by Al Milgrom and nice Thanos shots throughout.  This should finish strong.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $3,500.

I'm going to wrap up this week's column with a Herb Trimpe page from Super-Villain Team-Up #6.  This page has had some strong bidding so far as well.  It's a winner of a page with all for members of Fantastic Four in action.  However, I can't see it going a whole lot higher though by Sunday evening.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $900.

Happy bidding everyone!  Best regards, Lee

3/11/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

After missing two weeks of writing about Heritage weekly auctions, I am trying to get back on track, starting with a look back in time at my two predictions for the Heritage weekly auction that ended back on 2/18/18:

Irv Novick Joker #9; ComicArtAds estimate $450, final price including BP--$1314.50

Dick Dillin Hawkman #27; ComicArtAds estimate $600, final price including BP--$262.90

Well, that was pretty sad.  Note to self:  Novick Joker hot, Dillin Hawkman not.  I hope I can turn things around a bit with this week's Heritage weekly auction

The first piece to catch my eye was a John Byrne/Joe Rubinstein Drax the Destroyer illustration from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.  Four other Byrne/Rubinstein Handbook pieces came up for auction at Heritage on August 12, 2017, and the finishing prices ranged from $406.30 (Rama-Tut) to $2,031.50 (Aurora from Alpha Flight).  Even though Byrne did not draw Drax much at all in his heyday, the Marvel "cosmic" characters seem to be desirable these days.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,250.

I was interested to see a somewhat rare John Carter Warlord of Mars page by Gil Kane and Rudy Nebres (with assumed art assists from Joe Delbeato) in this auction.  These pages have historically been collected with some fanfare by one person, although a few pages have popped up in other collections as well here and there over the years.  Heritage previously offered up a Kane/Nebres John Carter page in 2006, and that page went for $239.00.  I think this page will do better, even though it doesn't feature the title character or his main squeeze.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $750.

The next page is a somewhat guilty pleasure for me, the climax of the bizarre "Is Deb Whitman insane or just really annoying?" subplot, as depicted by Bob Hall and Jim Mooney in Spectacular Spider-Man #74.  The item description includes some helpful but ignored editorial advice regarding that stark and large first panel.  A Bob Hall Marvel Team-Up #126 page featuring Luke Cage and the Son of Satan (why not?) sold for a little over $500 on Heritage in August 2017.  This page could do a lot better if only two bidders decide this is their Deb Whitman grail page.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $1,100.

I also have a soft spot for the Arvell Jones et al. page from Iron Man #74.  The art is not the slickest you will ever see, but it is jam-packed with cool bad guys.  A page from the previous issue, with pencils by Arvell Jones and some great Iron Man action, sold for at little over $1,300 in September 2017 on Heritage.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $800.

I don't know much about penciller James Sherman, but I know a powerful panel page when I see one.  The Super Team Family #9 page by Sherman, featuring dramatic inks by Jack Abel, reaches out and grabs me.  I have no idea how this should finish, but it should be solid.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $375.

Finally, I would like to highlight a George Tuska Sub-Mariner #41 page that is enhanced greatly by some slick Sam Grainger inks.  There are nice shots of Namor in almost every panel and some decent action.  This could be a nice representative page for someone.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $900.

Enjoy the auction, and I'll let you know next week whether I was once again totally off-base with my predictions.  Best regards, Lee

2/18/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Less than 24 hours before yet another Heritage weekly auction, I would like to review my predictions from last week's Heritage weekly auction (ending 2/11/18):

Neal Adams Star Trek: The Crier in Emptiness cover lot; ComicArtAds estimate $3,000, final price including BP--$2,748.50

Paul Gulacy Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #15; ComicArtAds estimate $500, final price including BP--$896.25

Rick Hoberg What If? #16 lot; ComicArtAds estimate $600, final price including BP--$286.80

Don Newton Detective Comics #519 lot; ComicArtAds estimate $1,600, final price including BP--$2,390.00

The only auction I was fairly close on was the Neal Adams lot.  I was really surprised by the result for the two What If? #16 pages, which went for less than $150 each.  A 10-page lot is in the weekly auction that ends soon, and I'm kind of scared to see where that auction ends up.  I think that What If? #16 features pretty good art, and it should be worth a bit more than $150/page.  Oh well, on to this week's auction, which ends in 20 hours or so.  It contains some pretty cool stuff, including:

The Irv Novick Joker #9 page, from the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection, has some great head-shots of the Joker and some fun content.  Conrad Eschenberg was selling pages from this series for $45-$65 back in 1997.

Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $450.

Because I am running late, I'm just going to highlight one more page, the Dick Dillin Hawkman #27 page featuring Hawkman battling a flying, raging Yeti.  This is one of the greatest pieces of comic art ever.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $600.

I'll try to get back on track for next week's Heritage auction, which features some really stunning pieces that will be ending right after the upcoming Heritage Signature auction.  Best regards, Lee

2/11/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

The results of last week's Heritage weekly auction (ending 2/4/18) were quite interesting:

Neal Adams Phantom Stranger #4; ComicArtAds estimate $2,500, final price including BP--$2,748.50

John Byrne Namor #7; ComicArtAds estimate $800, final price including BP--$1,912.00

Rick Hoberg What If? #10; ComicArtAds estimate $300, final price including BP--$286.80

Mike Sekowsky Justice League of America #62; ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate $450, final price including BP--$525.80

I was not terribly off base with my predictions, with one glaring exception--the Namor #7 cover.  This mostly production art cover sold for the exact same price it sold for on Heritage in August 2017.  What are the chances of that happening?  It's nice to see that the consigner did not take a hit on this piece, and that this cover retained its value over the past six months.  The real shocker from last week's auction was a three-page lot of Star Trek book-and-record art by Russ Heath, which sold for $8,365.00.  I have fond memories of those Peter Pan books and records, but I didn't think these three pages would finish anywhere near this price.

There are some groovy pieces in this week's Heritage auction, which ends on 2/11/18.  I have fond memories of the Peter Pan/Power Records comic-and-record combos, and the cover to Star Trek: The Crier in Emptiness by the Neal Adams Studio is cool.  If you read the item description, you learn that Mr. Sulu was drawn as an African-American in that book, and Lt. Uhura was drawn as a Caucasian.  It looks like Neal Adams might have worked on the cover a bit, but I don't see him much on the interior pages.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $3,000.

This week's auction also includes a nicely designed Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight page by Paul Gulacy and Terry Austin.  There's a lot of action, good Batman shots, and black ink on this page.  Heritage has offered several Gulacy Legends pages in the past, but they all have been from issues much later in the series.  Graphic Collectibles was selling these pages back in 1991, soon after the comics pubished:

This page is over $300 with BP as of this writing on a Friday morning, and I think the price still has some room to grow.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $500.

The first of quite a few pages to come to auction over the next two weeks from What If? #16 by Rick Hoberg and Bill Wray appear in this auction.  Dave Stevens did a little work on some pages from this book, but he is not credited on these two pages, so it's safe to assume Dave didn't work on them.  I think Rick had a pretty good memory of Dave's contributions to this issue.  These are solid pages from a pretty memorable story, but I think the price may be impacted by the large number of pages coming up for auction in the near future.  I bought a page from this issue from Rick a few years ago.  He's a nice guy, so I hope these auctions do well.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $600.

The final lot I'd like to highlight is a group of 7 pages from Detective Comics #519 by Don Newton and John Calnan.  You wouldn't know from the display image, but this lot includes a good Batman action sequence and a near full-page splash of Batman. The top bid on Friday morning is $239, so this could potentially be a good deal.  The Newton/Calnan team produces art that is pleasing to my eyes.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,600.

Enjoy the auction, and I'll let you know how I did in next week's edition of this column.  Best regards, Lee

2/4/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Once again, I went one for three with last week's Heritage weekly auction due to a couple of over-estimates:

Sal Buscema Incredible Hulk #260; ComicArtAds estimate $450, final price including BP--$454.10

Carmine Infantino Flash #149; ComicArtAds estimate $2,000, final price including BP--$1,195.00

Gil Kane Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #23; ComicArtAds estimate $700, final price including BP--$430.20

I must say I'm surprised to see a 1994 Arvell Jones Captain America Annual splash (with no Captain America) finish higher than a 1964 Carmine Infantino Flash page (with no Flash), but that's what makes this wacky hobby so much fun.  On to this week's Heritage auction, which as usual features some fun art.

There has been a lot of interest already in the Neal Adams Phantom Stranger #4 page, which as of this writing on Thursday is sitting at about $1,800.  Panel two is the highlight, although the bottom panel has some nice gargoyles.  I'm not a fan of how the Brooklyn Bridge stat looks on the original art, but it is what it is.  I have been overestimating pages like this lately, so I will try to reign myself in this time around.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,500.

The John Byrne Namor #7 "Cover Production Material" might almost qualify as a "flip" as it was sold at Heritage for $1,912.00 in August 2017.  This piece of art is mostly a Xerox with touch-ups by Byrne.  It is a great-looking image regardless, but I don't see the page equaling the August 2017 sale price, which was a nice profit over its May 2015 Heritage sale price of $657.25.  Will this cover find a "forever home" this time around?  Let's hope so, as I think this could end up being affordable once again.  Your ComicArtFans pre-auction estimate: $800.

The Rick Hoberg What If? #10 page confirms my suspicion that Rick has consigned most of his remaining artwork to Heritage.  I bought a few pages from What If? #10 directly from Rick in 2015, and his asking price (which I paid of course) was $400/page.  I passed on this page, although it is lovely.  Your slightly conflicted ComicArtFans pre-auction estimate: $300

This is quite a week for late-1960s Justice League of America (JLA) art, with four solid examples by Dick Dillin and Mike Sekowsky in this auction.  The most appealing piece to me is page 14 from JLA #62, with inks by George Roussos, who is someone I don't automatically think of as a JLA inker.  Roussos's inking style is a bit jarring, but the page has some good images of Batman and the Flash.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $450.

Enjoy the auction, and I'll let you know how I did in next week's edition of this column.  Best regards, Lee

1/28/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Greetings all!  I got one out of three right in my predictions for last week's Heritage Auction, which I think included some pretty good deals:

Rick Hoberg What If? #7 pages; ComicArtAds estimate $1,200, final price including BP--$717.00

John Calnan/Murphy Anderson Action Comics #410 pages; ComicArtAds estimate $1,500, final price including BP--$836.50

George Perez Iron Man sketch; ComicArtAds estimate $400, final price including BP--$389.57

If you happen to be a John Calnan collector, then you probably have been thrilled with the prices at Heritage over the past few months of Calnan, Calnan, Calnan in the weekly auctions.  Even early-1970s pages with really nice inks by Murphy Anderson, like the lot of 3 pages from issue #410, are going for less than $300/page.  I think paying less than $200/page for a nice sequence from an early issue of the original What If? series is a bargain as well.

Looking ahead to the auction ending this Sunday, 1/28/18, there are some interesting pieces once again.  I am a big fan of Sal Buscema's Marvel art, so the Incredible Hulk #260 page is nice to see.  This is from the period when Sal began to ink himself in the early 1980s, but before he developed the stylized self-inking style he utilized in Spectacular Spider-Man in the late 1980s.  Similar pages have gone for around $450 on Heritage in recent months, so...your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $450.

Another Ethan Roberts estate piece appears in this auction, in the form of a dynamic Infantino/Giella page from Flash #149.  The tanning might hurt the price, but I still think it will finish fairly strong.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,000.

As I am running late with this column, I will highlight just one more piece, also from the Ethan Roberts estate.  The Gil Kane/Rico Rival Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #23 page seems to feature the origin of the Jack of Hearts.  Rival's inking is a little odd here, but I know there are some collectors who really dig the Jack of Hearts.  This page may do better than expected.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $700.

Thanks for reading, and I'll try to publish another set of auction estimates in a week or so.  Best regards, Lee

1/21/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Hello everyone!  Another late installment, but here goes....  First, the results from the pieces I highlighted last week, which included one severe overestimate, one very close guess, and two estimates that I consider to be in the general ballpark:

Bob Brown Warlock #7; ComicArtAds estimate $2,250, final price including BP--$836.50

Michael Golden X-Men Annual #7; ComicArtAds estimate $1,500, final price including BP--$1,434.00

Frank Robbins Giant-Size Invaders #1; ComicArtAds estimate $900, final price including BP--$746.88

John Severin Creepy #10; ComicArtAds estimate $1,200, final price including BP--$1,434.00

The big shocker for me was the Warlock splash finishing $200+ less than it sold for 4.5 years ago.  Someone on the CGC Boards recently asked whose stock is going down in terms of original art prices, and I'd have to say Bob Brown could be one artist whose prices are stagnant if not decreasing.  I picked up several pieces when Mike Burkey listed dozens and dozens of pages on his website years ago, but I have none of them at this point.  Maybe that's for the best, but I still liked that Warlock splash.

As for the Heritage weekly auction ending this Sunday 1/21/18, there again are some interesting pieces.  I'm a big fan of the first 12 or so issues of What If?, so the lot of four pages from What If? #7 by Rick Hoberg and Sam Grainger caught my attention.  This is a fun little sequence showing Flash Thompson acquiring Spider-Man's powers.  Even though Spidey does not appear in costume on these pages, they are still fairly sharp-looking pieces of art.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,200

Another nifty group of pages comes from Action Comics #410, with art by John Calnan and Murphy Anderson.  There are some very nice Superman images on each page, and Murphy Anderson's inking really shines here.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,500

I'm going to wrap up this quick column with an exceptionally involved vintage Iron Man sketch by George Perez.  This sketch, from 1978, has some rough elements but includes two images of Shell-Head, plus an attempt at a logo at the bottom of the sketch.  "Phil" must have been very happy when George handed it to him 40 years ago.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $400

Until next time, keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!  Yours in art, Lee

1/14/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Hi folks!  Sorry for not getting this posted sooner, but I have been sidelined by a nasty cold and cough.  My predictions from the first Heritage weekly auction of the new year (ending 1/7/18) were way low with one exception:

Al Williamson Marvel Super Special #27; ComicArtAds estimate--$15,000, final price including BP--$15,535

Ross Andru Brave and Bold #199; ComicArtAds estimate--$700, final price including BP--$2,031.50

Carmine Infantino Detective Comics #327; ComicArtAds estimate--$1,300, final price including BP--$2,868

Jim Starlin Detective Comics #481; ComicArtAds estimate--$1,000, final price including BP--$2,868

So the estimate that was the wildest guess for me ended up being almost perfect, and the estimates based on recent comps were way off.  I'm glad to see that the estate of Ethan Roberts continues, for the most part, to obtain strong results from its consignments to Heritage.  The big surprise to me was the Enlongated Man page price.  I guess DC Large Art is continuing to surge in value as it more frequently appears at auction.

Moving along to this week's Heritage auction, ending 1/14/18, I see several items that are of interest to me.  First, I think the Bob Brown Warlock #7 splash page is pretty great.  The big, moving image of Counter-Earth Doctor Doom, as well as the smaller, full-figure drawing of Adam Warlock, make this page a winner.  When this piece came up for auction at Heritage in 2013, inks were attributed to Tom Sutton, but I guess I can see Frank Giacoia's style in the heavy blacks on the Doom figure.  I need to force myself to be more aggressive with my estimates this week, so...your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $2,250.

The Michael Golden X-Men Annual #7 page was also previously offered by Heritage back in 2013.  I guess five years is a respectable amount of time to keep a page you won on Heritage before giving it back to Heritage for sale.  The description of this page generously calls it "splashy," bit it does include some nice little shots of some of our favorite X-Men.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,500.

The Frank Robbins Giant-Size Invaders #1 page is certainly fun, with a dynamic flashback action scene.  Some work was done to the final panel, but that doesn't seem to be inhibiting the bidding so far.  Curiously, this page was not previously offered by Heritage in 2013.  A day before the auction ends, bidding has hit $500, and I think it's not going to double that by the end.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $900.

I'll try to finally wrap things up with a lovely one-page story by John Severin from Creepy #10.  I especially like the demonic black cat crashing through the window!  I don't have any comps or old ads for this piece, but it seems like someone would happily pay $1,000+ for this great-looking art.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,200.

Please look forward to my next, hopefully much more timely report, where I will fill you in on the success or failure of my predictions, and present more ComicArtAds pre-auction estimates for the next Heritage weekly auction.

1/7/18 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Happy new year everyone, and welcome back to the ComicArtAds comic art auction previews for the Heritage weekly auction.  As usual, I'd like to review my predictions from last week's Heritage weekly auction (ending 12/31/17) and the final results:

Kieron Dwyer Captain America #361; ComicArtAds estimate--$400, final price including BP--$286.80

Jim Aparo Phantom Stranger #11; ComicArtAds estimate--$500, final price including BP--$454.10

Al Milgrom Spectacular Spider-Man #100; ComicArtAds estimate--$800, final price including BP--$3,107

Don Perlin Transformers #29; ComicArtAds estimate--$450, final price including BP--$657.25

My estimation prowess was not impressive this past week.  I was only close on the Phantom Stranger page.  The big shocker was the Spectacular Spider-Man #100 page.  I guess at least two collectors really liked the excellent Spidey-Kingpin action panels.  I continue to be generally mystified by the prices of Transformers panel pages.  I wish the Captain America page had gone for a bit more, but I didn't bid on it, and I guess other collectors didn't either.  Congratulations to the winner, as that Cap page was a solid example from a fun storyline.

This week's Heritage weekly auction already has one jaw-dropping item:  the Al Williamson Return of the Jedi panel page, currently sitting at $10,000.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a price like that for a Howard Chaykin page from the 1970s move adaptation, but this price caught me off guard.  Then again, pages from this book were advertised at pretty high prices over 20 years ago:

The above image credits Dave Stevens as an artist.  I wonder whether Dave lended any assist to the page on Heritage.  Regardless, I think this strong price is the result of good timing and a scarce supply of vintage Star Wars art at auction recently.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: uh, considering this already is higher than I would have imagined, let's say $15,000.

I find the unusual art combination of Ross Andru and Rick Hoberg to be quite pleasing on this page from Brave and Bold #199.  A lot of six pages, that included this Batman-Deadman beauty, was auctioned at Heritage back in 2003.  Once again, this page is from the amazing collection of Ethan Roberts, although I'm not sure Ethan won this page as part of the 2003 lot.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $700.

A Carmine Infantino Enlongated Man page from Detective Comics #327 is off to a strong start at $600.  This page also comes from the Ethan Roberts collection.  A page from the same story sold for about $1,100 at Heritage a little over a year ago.  I think the page currently at auction is a little nicer.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,300.

I will continue to focus on Detective Comics with my final prediction for this week, which comes from issue #481, with art by by Jim Starlin and P. Craig Russell.  Not surprisingly, this solid example also comes from Ethan's collection.  A nice page from the same issue was offered by Graphic Collectibles in 1997:

Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $1,000.

Thanks for reading, and please tune in next week when I report on the success or failure of my predictions, and present more ComicArtAds pre-auction estimates for the next Heritage weekly auction.

12/31/17 UPDATE++++++++++++++++++++

Happy holidays, and welcome to my third installment of Heritage weekly comic art auction previews!  First, I'd like to review my predictions from last week's Heritage weekly auction (ending 12/24/17) and the final results:

Dale Keown Incredible Hulk #387; ComicArtAds estimate--$900, final price including BP--$1,075.50

Joe Kubert Star Spangled War Stories #147; ComicArtAds estimate--$3,500, final price including BP--$4,063.00

Alex Toth Eerie #64 two-page lot; ComicArtAds estimate--$2,800; final price including BP--$4,063.00

Herb Trimpe Defenders #80; ComicArtAds estimate--$375, final price including BP--$418.25

I have to pat myself on the back, at least for three of the four estimates.  Perhaps the fact that my estimates were around 15% less than the final price is a tribute to my personal cheapness and not wanting to pay full market value on art.  I was pretty far off on the Toth lot, which finished stronger than the two-page lot the week before from Eerie #2.  Is the Eerie #64 story somehow significant?  I don't get it, but it looks great, and I don't blame someone paying that kind of money.  Overall, I think last week's Christmas eve ending did not affect prices much.

This week's Heritage weekly auction, ending on New Year's eve, has some interesting pieces, but one piece in particular stands out to me for personal reasons.

I bought page 9 from Captain America #361 in 2005 and likely paid around $50 for it.  The page features everyone's favorite Gallic gangster, Batroc the Leaper.  I was trying to find Batroc comic art examples by as many artists as possible in the 2000s.  I have since partly moved on from that collecting theme, but I still have a soft spot for Batroc.  In January 2015, I worked out a deal with long-time art collector Ethan Roberts to trade a big box of his old comic art catalogs for this piece of art.  This trade inspired me to try to share old art ads in a serious way, so I will always be thankful to Ethan for this trade.  I still like this page and hope it does well, although I'm not going for it.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $400.

There has been a lot (and I mean a lot!) of talk of a Howard Chaykin Phantom Stranger commission on the CGC boards this month.  Although there is no Phantom Stranger image with pasted-on corrections, it's still nice to see a vintage Jim Aparo Phantom Stranger #11 page in this week's Heritage auction.  This same page sold for $227.05 on Heritage in November 2014.  Vintage Phantom Stranger pages by Aparo that feature the title character have sold for $775+ over the past couple of years.  This is a good-looking title page with a creepy bad guy, so I think it has some appeal.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $500.

The page from Spectacular Spider-Man #100 by the team of Milgrom, Isherwood, and Colletta is an interesting piece with some things going for it, as well as a few features that could make it somewhat affordable.  The Spidey/Kingpin battle action is great, but there is some noticeable water damage in a bottom corner.  There seems to be some ink fading on background inks in places as well.  A less-desirable page from the same issue sold for $573.60 a little over two years ago.  I think bidders might overlook the condition issue and focus on the fight scene, and the nice portraits of the Black Cat.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate: $800.

I'll wrap up this week's installment by focusing on a page from Transformers #29 by Don Perlin, Ian Akin, and Brian Garvey.  I have been surprised to see the reasonable final prices for Jose Delbo/Dave Hunt Transformers pages in recent months on Heritage, which have ranged in price from $143.40 to $358.50.  Perhaps issues from two years earlier, by different art teams, are more desirable to collectors?  A Perlin/Akin/Garvey page from Transformers #25 went for $657.25 in April 2016.  I have a hunch that this will finish stronger than the Delbo/Hunt examples, although I don't know Transformers comics and art fans enough to say why.  Your ComicArtAds pre-auction estimate:  $450.

Thanks for reading, and please tune in next week when I report on the success or failure of my predictions, and present more ComicArtAds pre-auction estimates for the next Heritage weekly auction.

Yours in art,

Lee
